7 Methods For Making Money With Copy
Everybody tells you to learn copy.
Nobody tells you how to convert your copy skills into dollars.
Once you know how to write copy that actually converts, here’s 7 ways you can use it to generate strong returns:
#1) Write copy for clients (obvious)
You can do this in one of two ways.
You can either find people who are already using/needing high converting copy. Financial publishers. Health publishers. Info-product business owners. eCom companies. Course creators. Supplement companies.
And use copy to convince these individuals to use your copy skills to grow their biz (you know this already).
The second way is similar, but a little different…
Instead of going to clients who are already using/needing high converting copy, you find individuals with large followings who are NOT benefiting from high converting copy.
Maybe these individuals are too branding oriented.
Or just don’t know direct response marketing. Whatever.
You find these experts (simple YouTube search for certain topics will yield a ton of large accounts that could quadruple their results by leveraging direct response marketing) and create a partnership.
They create some type of product (ideally info) for their niche.
And you write all the copy for the product pitch.
“But everybody does that already…” you say.
And rightfully so.
That’s why I recommend doing this with a little twist (so you can position yourself as a specialized expert that hardly anyone else can compete with).
Go into servicing high ticket info-products (work with large accounts to create these products).
Get really good at writing killer webinar scripts that sell these high ticket info-products (90% of copywriters you think are competition shy away from doing the hard work. Everybody wants to write a few emails and make a killing from the beach. F that. Specialize in writing killer webinars that successfully sell high ticket info-products. Then work with large accounts and help them monetize in exchange for an upfront fee & percentage of sales.)
If you do the above, you’ll differentiate yourself very quickly…
Brand yourself as an expert…
And make an absolute killing doing it.
(This is the approach I took when I got into the game. Except I didn’t go down the webinar road, but the long-form sales letter route).
It’s more work up front, but larger payouts for the long haul.
(Note: If you can’t get clients, then your copy skills aren’t good enough. No hate, just the truth. Go back and strengthen those. If you know how to write copy, you can easily and quickly get clients. And no it’s not a numbers game. It’s a matter of having and demonstrating skill.)
#2) Create a ‘Freelance’ Empire
On various job boards (example: UpWork) are a ton of jobs in almost every industry possible.
People needing graphic designers.
Video editors.
Developers.
Media buyers.
You can hop on these job boards not only under your own name, but under an Agency name and get really good at using your copy skills to win these contracts/jobs.
This is a lot easier to do than some of the other methods recommended here because you’re selling to people who are problem aware/actively looking to spend money (unlike a cold email where you have to sell people on the problem, then present your solution and convince them to part with their hard earned funds).
Once you land these jobs under your agency name, you can outsource these gigs by finding talented people in FB groups/your referral network. And just major in using your copy skills to win contracts/jobs.
Lots of people assume there isn’t a lot to be made on job boards and there’s some truth to that. Lots of low paying shit jobs (great nonetheless for building your skills). But you’d be surprised at what’s possible with a little bit of consistency/eating shit (Back in the day I once landed a client in my early days for a lousy $100. 1 year later, I was still working with that client, but he wasn’t paying $100 anymore. But thousands a month. That working relationship lasted for years and made me multiple six figures with ease.) If you deliver good work (and especially in a revenue generating capacity), then you’re golden. And can crush it.
Most people are in it for the quick buck.
Focus on the long game.
And profit.
#3) Create an ‘Outreach Firm/Company’
Find small agencies that have experience/proof/know how to generate killer results
Sell these people on becoming a client for your Outreach Firm
How does it work? Your company sells ‘Outreach’ services to the agency which is just a fancy way of saying you use your copy skills to write cold emails, cold messages, cold DM campaigns, etc. for the agency/your client in an effort to generate new business for em (your company handles all the outreach with the goal of booking strategy sessions/sales calls)
For every qualified sales call your company books, you receive $x + a percentage of what the new client is worth (when/if closed).
This business runs and breathes on your copy skills (and doesn’t require you to worry about service delivery or anything like that)
#4) Write copy to sell hot affiliate offers.
Find hot offer for a large market.
Write copy for the funnel (including back-end).
Choose a traffic source.
Write ad copy for your respective traffic source that generates qualified clicks.
Track your numbers, fail, optimize, profit, scale & repeat.
#5) Write copy to sell your own products/brands.
Find hungry targets in a large markets
Create a product that scratches their itch or fills the hole of insecurity/pain/desire inside them
Write copy for the funnel (i.e. Clickbank style offers)
Choose between organic and/or paid traffic
Write ad copy and/or organic copy to drive your target into your funnel.
Track your numbers, fail, optimize, profit, scale & repeat.
#6) Use your copy skills to build a traffic source/empire
Good copy teaches you how to get inside a markets heart…
And give them what they want.
You can use this skill to build mini-traffic sources such as:
Twitter profiles
IG meme pages
YouTube channels
TikTok pages
Facebook Pages
Etc.
Once you’ve built up sizeable traffic, you can either use your copy skills to sell affiliate offers to your followers, your own products, or sell the “attention” you have to bigger brands/companies.
#7) Use your copy skills to become a guuuuuruuuuu.
Recommend this the least if you’re just starting out (you want to get real experience and build real shit first).
But it works the same way as #6 - but instead of creating a generic page around the tastes of your niche, you create a page around yourself that tailors to your niche.
How?
By using your copy skills to get inside your chosen target’s head…
… until you know what type of content will resonate…
… and which won’t.
Then by supplying that content…
Through stories, personal examples, and insights.
Over and over again.
Until you’ve built a quality following (a quality following of ~2500 could generate you six figures. Focus not on quantity, but quality).
Once you have, people will trust and love you.
And will want to buy from you.
At this point, you can sell (create or affiliate) a relevant offer to your niche such as a beauty product if you’re in the makeup a niche, self dev course if you’re in the personal growth niche, detox info-product if you’re in the detox niche - whatever.
You get the point.
Those are just 7 ways to make money via copywriting.
As you can see, the opportunities are endless for those who know how to write copy that captures attention and actually converts.
Not those who read a few copywriting books…
Handwrite a few sales letters…
Analyze a few controls…
